Mapping Hirst Wood

‘Mapping Hirst Wood’ represents a personal exploration of woodland near Shipley, West Yorkshire, over a period of several months. Regular visits, walking, observing and recording were used as a way of mapping the place, helping me to document my experience and better understand why I feel a close connection to this woodland. The work uses hand embroidery as a method of drawing my remembrance of the woodland and is worked on woollen cloth that has been dyed with plants from the site. This ‘map’ works in conjunction with small bundles of cloth and plant material that act as time capsules, recording my visits to the woods and capturing something of my experience of the time and place.
