Some commonly asked questions answered
What inspires you?
As with most artists and designers I can’t help but be influenced by most
things I see and experience, but some things have a special resonance for
me. Currently I am very strongly influenced by historical domestic textile
crafts such as quilting, patching, mending, knitting and simple embroidery.
Both the materials and the process of making them are a source of inspiration.
I have always loved historical garments and textiles, and I enjoy visiting
museums like the V&A, Pitt Rivers and the Whitworth Art Gallery.
Have textile crafts always been a part of you lifestyle?
I learnt to sew and embroider at home as a child, taught by my Mum. I
grew up surrounded by materials and sewing paraphenalia and my Mum made a
lot of my clothes. It seemed a natural progression to study embroidery at
university and I loved the fact it was such an unnusual degree course.
Why do you use recycled materials in your work?
Although environmental issues are important to me on a personal level,
using recycled materials in my work was a more instinctive action. Growing
up in a very thrifty family nothing was wasted and many things were re used
and reinvented quite imaginatively. Reusing materials and making use of
old things makes sense to me and I enjoy working with things that already
have a life and personality.
Do you offer work experience placements?
I appreciate how difficult it is to get placements but due to my studio
being in my home it can be tricky for me to offer places. Sometimes I may
be able to offer unpaid placements for one week per student in the summer
vacation. If you would like to be considered for a placement please send
your contact details and CV to the address on the contacts page.
